چکیده

We present a sample of 34 spectroscopically confirmed BzK-selected ∼ 1011 M⊙ quiescent galaxies (pBzK) in the COSMOS field. The targets were initially observed with VIMOS on the VLT to facilitate the calibration of the photometric redshifts of massive galaxies at z & 1.5. Here we describe the reduction and analysis of the data, and the spectrophotometric properties of these pBzK galaxies. In particular, using a spatially resolved median 2D spectrum, we find that the fraction of stellar populations with ages <1 Gyr is at least 3 times higher in the outer regions of the pBzK galaxies than in their cores. This results in a mild age gradient of ∆age ≤ 0.4 Gyr over ∼6 kpc and suggests either the occurrence of widespread rejuvenation episodes or that inside-out quenching played a role in the passivization of this galaxy population. We also report on low-level star formation rates derived from the [OII]3727Å emission line, with SFROII ∼ 3.7 − 4.5 M⊙ yr−1. This estimate is confirmed by an independent measurement on a separate sample of similarlyselected quiescent galaxies in the COSMOS field, using stacked far-infrared data (SFRFIR ∼ 2− 4 M⊙ yr−1). This second, photometric sample also displays significant excess at 1.4 GHz, suggestive of the presence of radio-mode AGN activity.

STAR FORMATION IN THE HOSTS OF HIGH-z QSOs: EVIDENCE FROM SPITZER PAH DETECTIONS

We present Spitzer rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of 12 z 2 millimeter-bright type 1 QSOs, selected from unlensed and lensed QSO samples and covering a range of AGN optical luminosities L5100 1⁄4 1045Y10 erg s . On top of the AGN continuum, we detect PAH emission from luminous star formation in nine objects individually, as well as in the composite spectrum for the full sample. PAH lumino...

Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey XVI : The Luminosity Function for Galaxies in the Region of the HDF - North to z = 1

We have carried out a study of the luminosity function (henceforth LF) of galaxies in the region of the HDF-North using our very complete redshift catalog. We divide the sample into five redshift bins covering the range 0.01 < z < 1.5 and consider three primary galaxy spectral classes. We solve for the LF at four rest frame wavelengths from 0.24 to 2.2μ. We find that the LFs for quiescent galax...

Dust-induced Systematic Errors in Ultraviolet-derived Star Formation Rates

Rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosities form the ‘backbone’ of our understanding of star formation at all cosmic epochs. These luminosities are typically corrected for dust by assuming that the tight relationship between the UV spectral slopes (β) and the FUV attenuations (AFUV) of starburst galaxies applies for all starforming galaxies. Data from seven independent UV experiments demonstr...

Hidden Star Formation : The Ultraviolet Perspective

Many recent estimates of the star formation rate density at high redshift rely on rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) data. These are highly sensitive to dust absorption. Applying a correlation between the far-infrared (FIR) to UV flux ratio and UV color found in a local starbursts to galaxy samples out to z ∼ 3, one can account for most of the FIR background. However, the correlation is based on a sam...
